Tranmere today secured the loan signing of Michael Weir from Sunderland until the end of the season.
The Northern Ireland U21 international, who has also represented his county at "B" level, can also play at right-back and joins Tranmere to bolster their options in both defence and midfield, with Les Parry currently unable to select midfielder Ryan Fraughan and defenders Max Blanchard and Marlon Broomes.
Weir, who's contract at the Stadium of Light is rumoured to end in June 2011, is the second Black Cats player to join Tranmere this season along with right-back Michael Kay, a player who Rovers are attempting to sign permanently.
22-year old Weir has been in the Sunderland youth system since the age of 16 having joined the club from Northern Ireland side Larne.
Although he is yet to make a first team appearance for Steve Bruce's side, Weir has gained first team experience out on loan at Non-League side York City where he gained seven appearances between November and January this season.
Weir has been training with Tranmere for the past week and his signing draws a close to Les Parry's attempts to sign the ellusive midfielder who he has been searching for since January.
He goes straight into Tranmere's squad to face Sheffield Wednesday at Prenton Park tomorrow night, although he may not start the game.
